Deputy Camacho Assists with Stranger Danger Seminar

With the growing concerns of child abduction and child safety in the local community, Champions Martial Arts decided to host a Stranger Danger/Safety seminar for children ages 4 years old to 12 years old, on Saturday October 18th, 2014. The goal was to teach the children to be aware of their surroundings, do realistic child safety drills and teach practical self-defense skills that is appropriate for children ages 4 to 12 years old.

Deputy Sheriff Victor Camacho volunteered to work with the children to focus on teaching how to be aware of their surroundings and how to identify a stranger correctly. Deputy Camacho talked with over 30 children about how to identify a stranger and what a stranger is. He clearly defined what a stranger is to the children. Deputy Camacho then did a drill with the children, using pictures and asking the children to tell him as many details as possible from the picture.  This techniques really engaged the children, which made is exciting and fun for them. Deputy Camacho spent over 30 minutes teaching and educating these young child.

After the awareness exercise was completed by Deputy Camacho, the focus was to teach the children how to do some basic break free techniques to get away from a child abduction scenario. Mr. Todd Bradley from Champions Martial Arts gathered the children together to teach basic wrist release defenses. The focus was to have a stronger opponent grab or try to take away a young child. The children were taught to do a basic break free or peel away technique and run away screaming, very quickly. The kids were broken down into groups and adults were tasked with grabbing the child, trying to simulate a real scenario. The child had a lot of fun, trying to get away from the adults. The children were also taught how to kick from the ground and get up quickly. And of course the adults had a chance to attack the children trying to motivate and make the drill seem as real as possible.

In the end, the children felt empowered and confident. They were also educated in how to report the identity of a stranger if they needed to do so. Self-defense training is not always about how to hit a person of how many techniques you can master, but about how to identify a situation and how to get out of the dangerous situation unharmed.

Deputy Camacho and Mr. Todd Bradley taught a well-balanced seminar to help the children in our local community better understand stranger dangers and safety.
